Plein Air...Painting Out of Doors
Over 100 years ago, artists moved from their studios to paint on location (en plein air) in order to capture the changing light and luminous colors of the landscape. In recent years, many artists have embraced this style for its spontaneity and bold, painterly strokes. For the fourth year, the Peninsula School of Art will again host 40 preeminent plein air artists from throughout the United States in the Door County Plein Air Festival.
The Door County Plein Air Festival
Beginning July 19, the festival artists will create hundreds of works in six days, depicting the unique sense of place and light that characterizes Door County. Free events for families - as well as prestigious ticketed events – will be held throughout the first week of the festival. Exhibit and sale of the artists’ works begins with the ticketed Collector’s Preview

and Gala Auction on Friday, July 23. The public is welcome to purchase works beginning on July 24 at a live auction at noon in downtown Fish Creek. The auction immediately follows the two-hour Quick Paint event in Clark Park. The Quick Paint involves two groups of artists; the 40 festival artists and the Dockside Painters (who compete for a spot in next year’s festival). The public opening reception for the Door County Plein Air Festival also takes place on Saturday, with the works remaining on display and for sale in the School’s Guenzel Gallery through August 7.
The largest festival of its kind in the Midwest, the Door County Plein Air Festival is also our non-profit School’s main annual fundraising event. For more information regarding the Door County Plein Air Festival, including the all-access Palette Sponsor ticket package, please call us or visit our festival website at:

Iron Pour
Saturday, October 2
Learn the ancient art of casting iron with sculptor Teresa Lind and her crew. The process is part of the fun. For a contribution, each participant will have the opportunity to create their own pattern for an iron tile. Using a traditional cupola furnace, students will watch as old iron castings are recycled by melting them down to over 2000 degrees farenheit, then the metal is poured into your own sand mold resulting in a new unique iron sculpture. At dusk, watch as the fiery furnace is stoked up and glowing liquid iron is poured. During the spectacle, hear great music, and enjoy seasonal beverages and treats. When the evening is over and the final sparks fly, you can check your piece, then let it cool and take it home to admire forever. Bring your friends, family, neighbors. Ticket price and materials fee to be announced. All ages welcome.
