Faux Bone™ is strong enough to be hammered, drilled or carved, malleable enough to bend with a small embossing heat gun, and versatile enough to accept dyes or paints. It is so strong you can rivet on it, die-form right on it, or hammer metal around it.

Concept
Study the ancient, yet enduring Ethiopian Coptic binding technique. This elegant sewing structure, combined with the use of traditional wooden covers and alternative mica pages, opens a wide range of possibilities for both the beginner and the advanced bookbinder.
Experience
After drilling, shaping and smoothing wooden book covers, your pages will be crafted from paper and plate mica, a material originally designed for lampshades, an intriguing element for book arts and collage. Finish your book by sealing the covers with milk paint and a coating of wax, before adding a leather closure. As time allows, Daniel will share various features he includes in his own bindings and sculptural books.
Instructor
Daniel Essig discovered his passion for bookbinding while earning his BS in photography at the University of Southern Illinois, at Carbondale. Working at Penland, he was introduced to the ancient style of wooden-covered Ethiopian Coptic books by Al Buck. Daniel remains interested in traces of the past, ancient binding styles, altered books, distressed finishes, and found objects. His aim is to make books just as precious as those medieval manuscripts. www.danielessig.com
