CAPTURE THE ESSENCE OF LAKES AND WOODS IN WATERCOLOR (WC800)
Kris Parins
Thu-Sat, May 15-17, 9am-4pm
Tuition: Member $305 /Non-Member $330
Intermediate
Watercolor is the perfect medium for painting water and forests: it flows and swirls, splatters and splotches, just like Mother Nature. Working from their own sketches and reference photos, students will learn ways to control the medium to make water seem wet, trees look convincing, and reflections appear natural. They will explore the specific color palette of our Northern Wisconsin landscape, with a primary emphasis on planning and the principles of good design. Supply List
Kris Parins has been involved in art and design all of her life; after earning her degree from the University of Wisconsin, she worked as a fiber artist, and later as an art director for advertising and design firms. The nature of watercolor introduces randomness and spontaneity to her work. Kris’ work has been juried into regional and national exhibits, most recently The Florida Watercolor Society and Watercolor Wyoming, and appears in Splash 9: Watercolor Secrets. She maintains studios on a small lake in northern Wisconsin and in Sarasota, Florida. www.krisparins.com

Kari Anderson
M-W, June 2-4 , 9am-3pm
Tuition: Member $265 / Non-Member $290
Advanced Beginner
Celebrate flowers and gardens and sunshine by painting them in watercolor. A great excuse to use bright colors and mix it up with watercolor crayon and watercolor pencil. Some of Kari’s favorites are apple blossoms, trillium, lilacs, hollyhocks, daffodils and tulips. In this class students will loosen up their tight paintings, learn to find negative shapes, and find ways to get more ‘punch’ out of their colors. Supply List
Kari Anderson is a watercolorist from Door County. She paints the many seasons of the historic peninsula but her favorite season to paint seems to be winter, when the pace of this tourist haven slows to a crawl and her ability to “use the paper” shines through. SIMPLIFIED BODY BUILDING: THE FIGURE IN WATERCOLOR (WC804)
Donna Brown
Thu-Sat, June 5-7, 9am-3pm
Tuition: Member $265 / Non-Member $290 plus model fee
Advanced Beginner
Using a series of exercises, we will explore shapes and values and magically the figure will appear! We will work from a clothed model to really learn to “see” and interpret the body. You will then work from your own photos to apply what you have learned to a figurative composition. The objective will be to become comfortable using the figure in your paintings in a fun and creative manner. No prior figurative experience is necessary. You will find the figure to be challenging but fun…one of the more interesting subjects to paint in watercolor, especially if you allow yourself a little freedom.
Donna Brown is a professional artist living in Door County. Although primarily self-taught, she studied printmaking and painting at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design and the Printmaking Center at the College of Santa Fe. She has Signature membership in Watercolor West and the Northwest Watercolor Society. Her work has been juried into numerous national exhibitions and is included in watercolor books Splash 5 and The Artistic Touch 2. Her White Barn Gallery is located in Baileys Harbor.

Open to All Levels
In the three day workshop, we will focus on selecting subject matter, paint application and the elements of a strong composition. Painting organic images during different stages of their life cycle comforts me by the fact that I have stopped them in time giving me a chance to contemplate where I am and where I’m going.” www.gahnmurphydesigns.com
BEGINNING WATERCOLOR FOR GLOWING EFFECTS (WC806)
Larry Johnson
Thu-Sat, June 19-21,9am-4pm
Tuition: Member $305 / Non-Member $330
Beginner
The beauty and “glow” of watercolor lies in its transparency—the light moving through the pigment to hit the white of the paper and bounce back to the viewer. In this workshop you will learn to make your paintings glow. Beginning with the basics of: color selection, equipment, values, composition, and focal points, we will progress to color mixing, brush strokes and painting simple subjects step-by-step. Our goal will be to complete two small landscapes using techniques demonstrated in class. Bring reference material, sketches, or photos to paint on the last day with lots of personal assistance from the instructor. Larry Johnson worked as an architectural illustrator and graphic designer for many years, but always found time for painting. Supply List
From 1964 to 1983, Larry had the reputation of one of the nation’s top wildlife artists, winning many awards as he traveled throughout the United States. He remained in the “corporate” world until a few years ago when he was transferred to the Midwest. Vowing to return to his art, the move gave Larry the opportunity to travel and experience the unlimited opportunity for new subjects. He now divides his time between the Midwest and the Pacific Northwest to participate in art shows, display in galleries and teach workshops throughout the nation.
BEYOND TRANSPARENT: CREATIVE EXPLORATIONS (WC807)
Donna Brown
M-W, June 23-25, 9am-3pm
Tuition: Member $265 / Non-Member $290 plus materials fee
Advanced Beginner
Do you love the immediacy of transparent watercolor but wish you could change something when it goes wrong? In this workshop we WILL change it! We will use the no-no’s of transparency—black and white and other opaques. Rip it up, collage it, glue it, gesso it, have fun with something you would have thrown out, go for broke. Recycle the ”mistake” into a new work of art while gaining creative insight. A fee of approximately $10 will be payable to instructor for materials, so that you do not have to invest in these things until you have a chance to play with them—just bring your regular transparent paints and tools.
